The Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement - Peter Levine

The level at which people take an active role in their community has declined in recent years in the United States. Efforts to improve civic engagement have traditionally focused on young people in public and private schools. Peter Levine, an expert on civic education, talks about these efforts to help young people become active adult citizens.

Meet Peter
Peter Levine is the director of the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement and is former chair of the Campaign for the Civic Mission of Schools. His book, “The Future of Democracy: Developing the Next Generation of American Citizens,” addresses the importance of the U.S. education system in teaching young people the skills to actively participate in their communities. In this interview, Peter says that better civic education yields lifelong benefits.

CIRCLE was founded in 2001 with a grant from The Pew Charitable Trusts and is also funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York. It is based in the University of Maryland’s School of Public Policy.
