New Millenium?

New Millenium?

I would very much like to understand the position that our foundational documents like the Constitution need "interrogation" and "reflection" in the 21st century. Please explain this to me.

We should always reflect and interrogate the foundational documents in order to internalize their meanings and gain a greater understanding of them. Of course I do not mean interrogate in a sense of questioning their validity. I mean interrogation in the sense asking questions of the documents in order to find answers to today’s problems.

We should particularly do so now because of the marching pace of new technology. Many things possible today could not have been foreseen at the time of the founders and therefore we should reflect on the documents in order to ascertain how we can stay true to their principles in a world of technological change.

These are all things that Hunter Rawlings, president of Cornell university touched upon when we interviewed him at the World Forum on the Future of Democracy in Colonial Williamsburg. The short interview can be seen here.
