We are no longer Americans; mostly, we’re characterized as liberals or conservatives. Our nation is approaching the divisiveness that was present during the Civil War. It is no wonder that we have a dysfunctional government. Career politicians have adroitly diverted our attention from their poor performance by using a scapegoat, the other political party.

Every sector of the media, including comic strips, engages in this partisan rhetoric, conditioning us to participate in the blame game; while career politicians escape the scrutiny and criticism they justly deserve. Books that suggest reforms of our government are marginalized by presenting biased, non-objective material. These authors ignore the fact that non-representative legislators are the real cause of our inept government. Examples of this partisanship are: Conservative - Newt Gingrich’s book, “Real Change;” Liberal - the pamphlet, “The True Patriot,” by Liu and Hanauer.

We are so polarized that we believe everything the opposing political party does is bad and everything our party does is good. Our representative democracy was founded on consensus and compromise. Compromises are almost impossible in today’s contentious environment.

Help reunify this nation by refusing to play the partisan blame game. Let’s restore our brilliantly conceived, representative democracy by voting for individuals, who will treat public office as a service, not a career opportunity.

Anyone who thinks that "Our representative democracy was founded on consensus and compromise," knows little about the history of the early republic.
